Enrollment Growth Crisis Update from Interim Superintendent Catalina Nocon
May 3, 2010
Dear Staff, Parents, and Community Members of the Ross Valley School District,
The Board continues to work towards its June deadline to finalize the District’s facilities plans. At its meeting on Thursday, April 29th the Trustees tabled several options, which will not be reconsidered unless the remaining options become unfeasible. The tabled options include:
- A 1040-student 5-8 grade at White Hill
- Two middle schools, one at White Hill and one at Brookside
- A 500+ student K-5 at Manor
Options remaining under consideration include adding classrooms to the White Hill campus to accommodate between 760 and 800 students in 6th through 8th grades and adding K-5 classrooms to Fairfax either by
- modernizing Deer Park as a K-5 campus
or
- putting a new K-5 on the White Hill campus.
The Board also addressed discussions of the School Street site that took place during the recent Fairfax Community meetings. The Board initially considered this site during the District’s investigation of potential K-5 school sites, and subsequently rejected it as a viable option because of numerous and extensive structural, space and cost issues. Members of the Fairfax Town Council are scheduled to present information/results from their recent community meetings to the Trustees at the May 20 Board meeting. For more information on the District’s findings regarding the School Street site, please see www.rossvallyschools.org.
Board members will visit Parent Club/PTA meetings at all District campuses during the next two weeks to review the options under consideration and allow parents a final opportunity to ask questions and make comments. If you cannot attend any of these meetings, we strongly encourage you to email questions and comments to the District at: rvsuper@rossvalleyschools.org.
We want to hear from you!
Sincerely,
Catalina Nocon
Interim Superintendent
Ross Valley School District
